Making It Up

RW

Rich Westbrook

Owner/Director

Rich has been improvising since 2008 with an occasional foray into scripted plays. As the Director, he loves creating entertaining shows and challenging players. He teaches improv about five hours per week and also leads workshops to improve public speaking and communication skills. He hopes to someday build an army of improvisers and create a new world order based on spontaneity — and eat salted caramel full-time.

CG

Carrie Gerdes

Player & Teacher

Carrie has been resisting improv since 2008. After declaring she'd never do improv, never perform, and certainly never teach, she's now doing all three and savoring the joy and challenges of each. Carrie delights in moving an audience, while shifting them — and herself — out of their comfort zones. She also serves as Rich's backup brain and Assistant Monkey Trainer.

JS

Julie Steelman

Player

Julie has been making stuff up most of her life, so it seemed natural to join an improv troupe and master the art of nonsense. She is deeply passionate about photographing the world's wildlife and draws from her experiences in the bush to bring the wild side into her craft. After all, this is just a grand illusion, right?

AD

Adam Doorenbos

Player

As a two-time Iowa High School Allstate Improv Champion, Adam is quantifiably the most accomplished and talented member of the troupe. He does not let that get to his head — perhaps it is his love of all things corn or his unnaturally floppy joints that keeps him humble. Make sure to remind the rest of the troupe of his exceptional talent every time you see them.

BF

Benjamin Forest

Player

Benjamin has been a student of improv since 2019. The lessons of improv are the lessons of life: pay attention to others, take risks, embrace the moment then let it go, laugh at yourself. Ben delights in community, imagination, and playfulness — elements at the heart of improv.

ML

Matt L'Heureux

Player

Matt L'Heureux is kind of a secret goofball. Please don't tell anyone. He's managed to fool a lot of people for a long time and would very much like to continue doing so. That's his whole bio. He meant it.

TS

Tyler Smitty

Player

Tyler is in LaLa land most of the time — and by the fateful hand of kismet one day found himself wearing a romper at his first improv class, where he won the day. It's been an adventure since. His favorite beer is German, his favorite music metal and heavy, his favorite dog a toy poodle, and his shoe size 13. Let's keep it sunny in here!

AG

Adam Gordon

Player

Adam (known as Gordon in MCI because of… umm… that other Adam) has been acting since the Triassic, or at least since high school and college. Memorable roles include Bogart in Play It Again, Sam, Schroeder in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and the male lead in 6 Rms Riv Vu. After a 30-year detour into "real life," he's back on stage and having more fun than ever. He insists that improv classes were the most useful-in-life classes he ever took, and at 68, he's finally come back to the challenge and the fun of it all.

JB

Jasmine Bridges

Player

Jasmine returns to the stage after decades away, drawn back to the joy of play, performance, and connection she loved as a child. Raised as one of six kids, she learned improv early: listen fast, think faster, and always find an accent. Whether she’s dancing, playing basketball, or laughing at improv practice, she believes humor is where it's at. Improv reminded her how powerful laughter can be.

DA

Danny Aviles

Player

Danny started acting at 11, enrolled in improv classes by 14, and built a real list of leads along the way — Romeo, Seymour, Prince Charming, Charlie Brown, Othello — that he won't bring up himself but doesn't mind you knowing. He teaches improv to kids, takes the stage whenever he can, and fully commits to every character he plays. He had stopped acting to play pretend in the military for a while, but has returned to his passion after a decade away. The audience, so far, has not complained.

MN

Megan Breazeale

Player

Megan joined improv for the same reason she salsa dances: to stay present, embrace the chaos, and laugh when things inevitably go sideways. Her style ranges from heartfelt theatrics to clever wit, usually with at least one lowbrow joke sneaking in somewhere. Outside improv, she enjoys gardening and maintaining a deeply one-sided rivalry with homemade sourdough bread.

LG

Lee Garland

Musical Director

Lee played his first paid gig in Moss Landing, on the accordion, at age 11 and hasn't stopped playing music since. He is the piano (and occasionally accordion) player for the troupe and jumps up to join in the fun on stage as well. He has performed with the Grand Theater Company and was lucky to work with some of the funniest folk on the planet. Yes, he's old — like a fine wine.
